How do you handle an acquaintance whose only motivation is to get you into networking marketing or MLM?

Question by Andre: How do you handle an acquaintance whose only motivation is to get you into networking marketing or MLM?
About 2 weeks ago, I met someone who worked in my building who recognized me from Facebook. He said he knew my fiancee so we chatted for a bit. I gave him my contact info and a few days later he called.

This morning he left a message on my voicemail wanting to have lunch with me. He also left me an e-mail a few hours later. Why is he so interested in my friendship?

My first instinct told me that he was trying to get me into “multi level marketing”, similar to Amway and other pyramid schemes. I went to his Facebook page and saw a bunch of links to domains he created, and they were all selling/promoting a health product.

This situation is similar to experiences I’ve had with MLM types. It seems like they have this distorted view of reality and won’t take no for an answer. They never answer skeptical questions and insist that you either listen to a DVD or attend a meeting at a hotel to find out.

I have always ignored them and they eventually give up.

If you think he’s a cool guy, then tell him you’re not interested in any pyramid schemes/marketing things…he’s probably not going to listen…but none the less, worth trying.

When people pull this type of stunt, I just ignore them. They are probably not the type of person I would want to acquaint myself with anyways….so no loss. Ignoring may be the best way to get rid of him.

How to convince cousin get out of marketing scheme.?

Question by AZ: How to convince cousin get out of marketing scheme.?
I have an aunt who belongs to this Quixtar company, and she always wanted to get me and my cousin into it. My cousin and I hated the whole idea of network marketing because of the fact that all my aunt is doing is buying a lot of unnecessary things at home.

Last night i found out my cousin has finally give in to the temptation call “Market America”. His reason for joining is
1. His friends are in it
2. Young people organization (not some mad mom quixtar)
3. The pretty picture of earning more than any professional

I swear these presentation really can brainwash people.
What really concern me is that my cousin actually said if everything goes well, he might as well drop out of college (aka giving up his pharmarcical goal).

Answer by John R
Quixtar is the new AmWay. AmWay is MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) but is a very successful one. It’s along the level of Mary Kay and other large successful MLM companies. While MLM isn’t inherently bad, many people fail at it. It is hard work, like being a used car salesman.

As long as he isn’t dumping rent money or grocery money into this thing, the best way is just to let him do it. If he’s successful, you’ll be happy for him and if not, it’ll go away once he looses interest. However, the most likely thing is that he’ll make a few sales and get his money back then quit the business because strictly commission sales is rough.

Just let it slide for a while. It’ll work itself out.

Sleepees/Skinees – Marketing scam?

April 16th, 2012 3 comments

Question by oddfish: Sleepees/Skinees – Marketing scam?
A friend of mine is trying to convince me to get involved what I can see as a network marketing scheme selling two health products, Sleepees and Skinees.

In my cursory due dilegence, I evaluated the company’s website (http://ourworldnetwork.com). Finding 99% of the site’s content refers to its marketing program and 1% (if even that) is on the product is a bit disconcerning consider this is a health product.

The product description is a mere mention of its “natural, harmless” non-addictive ingredients. That’s all. No independent medical reports, no testing, no government approvals.

So I like to hear back from people and especially medical folks that have heard about this product. Is this a marketing scam or does this stuff work?

Best answer:

Answer by Marcello
I am not in the medical profession so I won’t attempt to comment on their product, but I am in the business profession and analyze business ventures for a living. I have analyzed the MLM industry and have made up my mind that MLM is a poor choice. There are other business ventures I also do not endorse, so it has nothing to do with any bias, although defensive MLMers will call my reasoning just that because they cannot refute the logic.

The fact is that MLM/Network Marketing ventures are typically filled with an over abundance of hype that you must sort through to get to the meat of the deal, and the reason is because that hype is needed in order to have everyone recruit people which is typically where money is made in MLM (and its fundamental flaw).

A couple questions you should consider:

-would you or your upline/sponsor/friend have any interest in selling this product if you could only make money selling the product and not signing up other people. Most people in MLM are not salespeople and if you can’t sell the product for a living, how do you propose to bring other people into your downline on the basis of the product and not the pyramid.

-could you actually make an acceptable income only selling the product. Again, similar to above, most MLM companies are set up where the only real chance for an individual to make money is in sponsoring other people, not selling the products. The fact that you think 99% of the focus is on sponsoring rather than sales is a tell tale sign that this is merely a pyramid scheme (whether its legal or not makes no difference).

-would you even have an interest in the this product if the idea of making money with it was not an option. Most people get into MLM for the supposed big money then convince themselves the product is so great. Convince yourself of the product LONG before you even consider selling it…becuase if the product is unworthy, than how could the business opportunity possibly have any merit.

-if this is being presented to you as a business opportunity, will your friend, or anyone who is successful willingly share you their provable income/expenses (likely with a tax return) as would be done in any other business. This is the biggest one and most frequent road block you will run into. There is so much hype in MLM and if not the one trying to sponsor you, there is always supposedly someone that is making a killing by running the business meaning you can too. However, if I was to buy a franchise and my associate was running a successful franchise, we would undoubtedly go in detail through the numbers so I could analyze my own prediction of future revenue and profit. But in MLM, you often run into a road block because suddenly that information is “personal” and “none of your business”. If you are being told that people are making money in this business yet no one is willing/able to prove it, you can bet its not true. Its either a business opportunity where numbers like revenue, expenses, profit, market share, etc are important, or is not. If those verified numbers are not being shared, then just like any other business in that situation, you know something doesn’t add up (most likely no one is actually making the money they are suggesting).

Anyhow, this is basic food for thought. Perhaps you can also take a look at common MLM issues in another question i answered before you make your decision as it might help give you some additional guidance…check here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AursQD6056SRKQcIzInll4vsy6IX?qid=20060828175009AAaVsvO

What do you think of Network Marketing? What are Pros AND Cons?

March 24th, 2012 3 comments

Question by : What do you think of Network Marketing? What are Pros AND Cons?
Compare those networks such as Avon, Herbalife, Amway and now, One24. Do you see a difference in any of these. Is there not ONE that breaks away from the “norm” of networking? I’d like your feedback on this. Thanks.
Thank you to all who have commented. I believe, after reviewing the network marketing arena, that it is for some and not for others. I am a new One24 rep and am loving my new home-based business. It is easy. Unlike others, their compensation plan is linear. It is not mlm. I have learned that bringing in 3 people to One24 and everyone else doing the same will retire me in @ 18-24 months. It’s crazy but true.
As mentioned previously, thanks to those who’ve commented. I needed feed back on others point of view concerning networking since I’ll be in it for a lifetime. Blessings to your businesses!

Amway has distributors in the US but was forced to close up their USA office after signing off
on a consent decree with the FED atty’s office.

ALL network marketing uses KITs and recruiting to grow and make $ and recruiting, when it is a major
part of their activity, is ILLEGAL. Check with the FED atty office.

MLM chooses to ignore the law, their clients, their agents and just “make money any way they can.”

THERE are no pros to MLM/network marketing

in 15+ European nations, it has been outlawed for 25 yrs.

I have spent $ 25M researching this field over 35 yrs.

finally, a true story;
as a young consultant in biz, I was introduced to a 7th level Amway lady whom I told no
re being a distributor……but when she learned about my skills, she asked me to audit
her records. I discovered she had been lied to by Amway and when she began
doing her accounting records the correct way, she discovered she was not earning
55k a year, but in fact, earning 25k a year and she tried to sell back to Amway the
things they had sold her on guarantees of return ability and a refund. Amway changed their
mind and told her to sue them.

She went ch 11 the next mo.
