Is this possible?

May 19th, 2012 2 comments

Question by mookiemonkee: Is this possible?
I was checking my temporary internet files this morning and found a few things that I know I haven’t accessed. For example, there are a few files named “searchresultsSBS”, and when I click on it, it’ll show that I “searched” for someone named “amanda iori”, “web domain hosting”, among other things.

I only use Firefox and found no suspicious activity when I looked in the history. When I opened up my Internet Explorer, however, there were records of my “visiting” other sites that I know I did not visit. Most were visited when both my husband and I were not even home, or sometimes when I was on the net. I am currently using a wireless adapter to connect to a wireless router, which is located in another room.

Is it possible that someone is “sharing” our internet connection? If so, is it also possible that this person’s sites are being recorded onto my computer and therefore showing in my history folder and in my temp internet files??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Answer by Dave PCX
If someone was sharing your internet connection (by connecting to your wireless network) their temporary internet files would not show up in the temporary internet files folder of your computer. You may have some variety of spyware installed on your machine running in the background. Try running a spyware scan with something like AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy or Windows Defender.

How do you block a web page?

May 17th, 2012 2 comments

Question by Modern_Monroe: How do you block a web page?
I have tried several things, including going into my control panel and to the restricted sites, however, the webpage is still being allowed. I also tried going in through My Computer to Windows and System32 and such. I haven’t been able to find a “host” under my “drivers” folder. Can anyone tell me how I can do this without buying software?

How can I save the hosts file without “txt”?

May 15th, 2012 2 comments

Question by the14yearoldmathwiz: How can I save the hosts file without “txt”?
I did run it as admin and I saved it in the notepad not as a text document, but under the “All Files” it still doesn’t work. It’s still a text document. I have searches the web for answers and they all say the same thing: save as the all files.

I remember when I first edited the hosts file is that I found an extension so that it’s not a txt. I don’t know what it is now, and I’m hoping someone can help me.

I run a Windows Vista 32-bit OS.

While I’m here, another question, I showed all of the hidden files and folders and the hosts file still doesn’t appear in the “etc” folder. I have to type the name “hosts” in the open dialog box to open it. Anyone know why that happens?

Thanks a lot to whoever who can help me. :)

Best answer:

Answer by Tom
When you select ‘All Files’, did you remove the .txt from the filename as well? That should work.

Otherwise open a dos prompt inside the etc folder and execute the following command:

ren hosts.txt hosts

The reason why hosts doesn’t appear is because it is a hidden file. Configure your explorer to also show hidden and system files, and it should appear.

Web hosting – Address bar will not update when browsing my site.?

May 13th, 2012 1 comment

Question by Dsijjin: Web hosting – Address bar will not update when browsing my site.?
Hey all :)

I’m sort of new in this whole “hosting” realm. I’ve finally coded a site and am currently hosting it through godaddy.com. I’m able to browse through my site’s pages and forum just fine by using the links I provided. The problem, however, resides with my url not auto updating. If I type in www.sitename.com in the address bar, it will take me to my home page. If I navigate through my site to the forums, it still just says www.sitename.com. Shouldn’t it correspond with how I have my folders set up on the ftp? I was hoping my forums section would give the following url: www.sitename.com/forum.

Again, I’m a noob when it comes to hosting :P I know just enough to make nice little site with some info. What do I need to configure in order to get my address bar to update?

Thanks!

Answer by John H
That’s odd. Have you tried tech support yet? They should be able to get into your account and take a look. You should have a directory in your hosting account mysite/forum. If you type in the actual forum address in the address bar does it go to your forum (i.e. www.mysite.com/forum/index.php)?

Sounds like a tech support issue if your web browser doesn’t have this problem with other sites and just yours.

Sebastian Cabot of “Ghost Story”??

May 11th, 2012 1 comment

Question by Sheila T: Sebastian Cabot of “Ghost Story”??
I’m a big fan of the old TV series “Ghost Story/Circle of Fear” (1972-73) and was wondering if there were any other fans out there who remember this show??
Also, I know this may sound like a silly request but, I am working on an art project and, I need a full-color photo of Sebastian Cabot. (He hosted “Ghost Story” and also played the character of Mr. French on the sitcom “Family Affair” back in the 60′s.) I’ve looked all over the web for a pic of this guy and, all I can find are thumbnail-sized images or B/W pics. (What I really need is simply a decent-sized color photo of Mr. Cabot just standing there in his usual suit and tie.)
If anyone can send me a link to find a photo close to this description, I would REALLY appreciate it as, my eyes are getting a bit blurry from surfing the web!! LOL
Thank you!!

It could be real, but personally I’d pick a more reputable company for my hosting. I think there are plenty of cheap hosting providers to choose from.

Know of a free webhost for storing php scripts?

May 7th, 2012 3 comments

Question by KillerKay: Know of a free webhost for storing php scripts?
hai guys
I’m trying to store a php script online. Not a webpage USING php, but a php SCRIPT. I’m not really sure how to do this :D lol. I signed up with this free ‘php web host” but everytime i store the script it tries to turn it into a webpage. I don’t know how to tell it that I want to store just a script. I have a feeling I’m doing everything completely wrong.. anyone know what I should do? Thanks for any help ^^
Sorry maybe I should be more clear

I want to store a file that contains php code. When I direct my server to this file, I want it to execute the code in it. I don’t want my BROWSER to interpret the code, rather, I want my server to execute it.. does that make sense? I barely know any php so it is quite likely that I’m talking nonsense :P :P

What do I need to start my online business?

May 5th, 2012 3 comments

Question by kagwish: What do I need to start my online business?
I want to start my own online business, but I don’t know exactly how to do it. I already sell from Ebay, and now I want to expand to another customer base. I have a name for it, and I know how I would like it to look, but I don’t know what stuff I need to start one. I know that I could go through Yahoo Small business, but it seems so sterile. Also, I want to be able to have my own domain name, but do I have to pay someone EVERY YEAR to be able to have it? I am just not quite understanding the whole “domain name” thing, or the “web host” thing, or how I actually get a site up and running…

HELP!

Best answer:

Answer by azrob68
First off, you do need a domain name. And yes, you do have to pay someone EVERY YEAR for it, but it’s less than $ 10. No big deal there.

You really have two choices: you can use a storefront service such as Yahoo, or you can create your own store using either purchased shopping cart software or an open-source shopping cart like osCommerce or ZenCart. If you go with something like Yahoo, you can be up and running pretty quickly but you’ll have more overhead costs.

If you go the custom route, you might need someone to help develop your site. Plus, you’ll need a merchant account to accept credit card payments (about $ 30 or more a month, plus a percentage of sales is typical). You also need to pay for a Web host, about $ 6-10 a month or so. In the long run, this approach will cost you less if you’re doing a fair amount of business, and you’ll have more control over your site.

If you have further questions, let me know.

Unblockable websites in a Mac using terminal command “sudo nano /etc/hosts”?

May 2nd, 2012 No comments

Question by : Unblockable websites in a Mac using terminal command “sudo nano /etc/hosts”?
I’ve been blocking websites that have been distracting me lately. I’m currently using a Mac OS X ver. 10.6.4. Browsed through the web and learned how to block websites using the Terminal with the command “sudo nano /etc/hosts”. I found instructions from the link below:

http://osxdaily.com/2007/03/19/block-access-to-specified-sites-by-modifying-etchosts/

After completely following every step, I am able to successfully block many websites but I have not been able to block all websites, namely 9gag (THE BIGGEST DISTRACTION OF THEM ALL).

I would greatly appreciate if anyone can help me block such websites.

Answer by Rainmaker
They most likely use DNSWCD (DNS WildCard Domain) hosts and without going to the relevant sites there is no way to actually determine who exactly you are trying to block.

Installer error: “package download failed: can’t connect to host!”?

April 30th, 2012 1 comment

Question by Amigo H: Installer error: “package download failed: can’t connect to host!”?
Hi all. I’ve got a iPod Touch 16Gb, jailbreaked with ZiPhone. Version 1.1.4

When I go to Installer and try to install anything at all, I just get this “package download failed: can’t connect to host!” message.

I’ve tried restarting and restoring and jailbreaking it again. I’ve tried refreshing sources. I’ve tried installing the update to Installer. I’ve tried clearing the queue I’ve tried some other methods which I’ve found in the web. Nothing seems to help.

My wifi connection works fine. I can browse in Safari, go to iTunes and Youtube.

Funny thing is, it worked fine a couple of days ago!

It could be the host server is down or overloaded..

Have you tried checking any other website or any blogs?

Goodluck…
